Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
🛠️ Technical
How do I update my peering MAC address?
MAC address changes are now automatic through the portal, please follow the steps: Editing a Peering Service.
Can I temporarily add a secondary MAC to my peering service?
No, since 9th March 2026 we no longer support allowing additional MAC addresses as MAC address changes are now automated via the portal. Follow the steps: Editing a Peering Service.
My membership is approved but I cannot order any service?
Membership invoice payment is a requirement to consume services, please follow the steps: Pay an Invoice.
I've ordered a port but my peering service is not up?
You need to order the peering service as that is bound to the service port you specify, follow the steps: Ordering a Peering Service.
Can I retain my peering IP addresses by migrating my peering to a new port?
Yes, please ensure you first have the new port ordered and it is up, then follow the steps: Migrating a Peering Service.
How do I add ports to my existing service port to become a bundle?
- Ensure your port is converted to LACP: Converting a Service Port to LACP
- Once LACP has been enabled, you can add ports to the bundle: Adding Ports to an LACP Bundle
- The new ports will be provisioned and added to the existing bundle ready for link up!
Can I have 2 'Primary' peering services on a port?
No, a service port shall only have one (1) unconstrained primary peering service and additional primary peering services require a separate dedicated service port. To join on the peering exchange without requiring a dedicated port we offer Virtual Peering which is rate limited to 1Gbps. More information is available at: IAA Virtual Peering.
How do I migrate a VLL whether I initiated it or not?
Follow the steps: Migrating a VLL Service.
How do I get the most traffic out of my peering service?
-
Setup bilateral BGP sessions. Many peers now require bilateral BGP sessions rather than peering with the route servers, and some peers share more routes through a bilateral session vs what they announce to the route servers. For this reason we highly recommend you review the relevant exchanges' peers list and ensure you follow target networks peering policy guidance typically found via their PeeringDB listing.
-
Opt-in to Content Caches. We operate a content distribution network via AS10084 with various caches across most exchanges, please review the 'CDN Policy Control' section here and configure the opt-in requirements to ensure our cache network connected at each exchange can serve you.
-
Verify you are preferring BGP learnt peering routes above all else by for example setting a higher local preference. Typical peers observe 60-80% of their traffic traverse their peering links, if you require assistance confirming your setup we are happy to help, please email support@internet.asn.au.
👥 Admin & Accounts
How do I transfer my services to another account?
A service transfer form must be completed by authorised persons on the account, please email accounts@internet.asn.au to begin this process
Can I enable automatic payment methods?
Yes! We highly recommend adding a payment method and to opt-in to recurring billing to avoid manual payments, follow the steps: Payment Methods
Can I manage multiple accounts under one same user?
Yes, on the target account please add the user by following these steps Adding a New Contact, ensure you use the same email as your primary account, once added refresh your page and navigate to the top right hand drop-down to switch between accounts.
💬 Events & Marketing
What events does IAA host?
IAA runs a range of events throughout the year, both online and in-person. Events cover networking, education, and milestone celebrations.
Each year we run the Convergent Event Series across Australia, where Members and their guests can connect in a relaxed atmosphere over drinks and light refreshments. We also host End of Year Celebrations in the cities that are home to our exchanges.
How will I find out about upcoming events?
All IAA Members are automatically subscribed to event communications. If you're not receiving updates, you can opt in via the IAA Website or check your portal user profile has "Member Communication Mailing Lists" enabled. Event information is shared via our newsletter and member emails, and can also be found in the Events section of the Portal and on our website.
Who can attend IAA events?
Unless otherwise stated, IAA events are open to Members and their guests with registration via the Member Portal. Corporate Members may register themselves plus up to 7 guests (internal or external to their organisation). Professional Members may bring one additional guest. All registrations must be completed through the Member Portal by the inviting Member.
How do I register?
Register via the Events section of the Member Portal. Registrations are open right up until the event starts. Members are responsible for registering themselves and any guests. By registering, you agree to comply with IAA's Code of Conduct for Events.
What if I have dietary requirements?
We make every effort to accommodate dietary needs. To ensure the venue can cater for you, please note that dietary requirements can only be taken into account for registrations received at least one week before the event. You'll have the opportunity to note requirements for yourself and your guests during the registration process.
I've registered but can no longer attend. What should I do?
Please email events@internet.asn.au to let us know. It's not mandatory, but we genuinely appreciate the heads up so we can plan accordingly.
Will there be photography at events?
Yes. By registering for an IAA event, you acknowledge that photographs taken on the day may be used by the Internet Association of Australia for promotional purposes, including on social media, our website, and in print publications. If you have any concerns, please raise them with a member of the IAA team before or at the event.
What if I have a complaint or concern at an event?
Please speak to an IAA team member at the time and we'll do our best to address it on the spot. Registered attendees will also receive a post-event survey where you're welcome to share feedback. Alternatively, you can email events@internet.asn.au at any time. Our approach to conduct at events is set out in IAA's Code of Conduct for Events.
